A few quick updates for Fall 2025!
1) The 'de minimis' exemption:
The first and most dramatic is the suspension of the 'de minimis' exemption by the US. Previously, goods could be shipped to the US duty free, for commercial shipments valued under US$800. Now that has been cancelled (as of August 29, 2025) and a 35% tariff has now been placed on all good being shipped to the US.
What does this mean for my US customers?
Unfortunately, this means I will not be shipping to the US until the tariff situation is resolved. I cannot pass on this %35 mark up to the consumer, in good conscience.
I am an optimist - I am hoping this issue is resolved soon and when it is, I will resume shipments to the US.
2) Canada Post Strike:
The second is the Canada Post strike that started on September 25, 2025. I have other options for shipping, but it is crucial to know that if you live in a rural area, or on a reserve, there could be delays in shipping.
I learned a lot last November when Canada Post went on strike right at the climax of the holiday rush. The major challenge was shipping to reserves. I found work arounds, but please keep that in mind for this season. For example, I had some rural customers ship to a family or friend in a larger centre, and then bring it to them. It's not ideal but I know what it means to live in the north, and know we have people working together all the time to get care packages etc., to people all the time. So last year I relied on this network. While it does create a bit more work on both ends, it got the job done.
Please reach out if you have any questions, I am happy to work with you as we navigate these challenges!

Desiree
